About the FIFA World Cup 2026 Teams
The FIFA World Cup 2026 marks a historic milestone in football history. For the first time ever, 48 national teams will compete across the co-hosted tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This expansion from the traditional 32-team format allows more confederations to send representatives, providing exciting new matchups between emerging football nations and world-class powerhouses.
Group Stage Format
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of 4 teams each. The top two teams from each group advance automatically to the Round of 32, while the best 8 third-place finishers also progress, making a total of 32 teams reaching the knockout stage. This format means every point counts in the group stage — even third-place finishes can secure progression to the next round.
European Powerhouses (UEFA)
UEFA has 16 qualification spots, bringing powerhouses like England, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, and Croatia. European teams have won 12 of the 22 World Cups held to date, and multiple UEFA nations are amongst the strongest favourites for World Cup 2026 glory.
South American Giants (CONMEBOL)
CONMEBOL contributes 6 teams, including defending champions Argentina, perennial contenders Brazil, and other competitive nations. South America boasts 9 World Cup titles between Argentina and Brazil alone, and both nations enter 2026 as genuine contenders.
North & Central American Hosts
As co-hosts, USA, Canada, and Mexico all receive automatic qualification, alongside other CONCACAF qualifiers. The USA has significantly improved their footballing infrastructure since missing the 2018 World Cup, and a home tournament could be the catalyst for a deep run into the knockout stages.
